RSPSoc2010 From The Sea-bed to the Cloud-tops
1st September, 2010 – 3rd September, 2010
In 2010 the first joint UK Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society and Irish Earth Observation Symposium conference will be held in Cork, Ireland. It will be hosted by University College Cork and the National Maritime College of Ireland from 31st August to 3rd September 2010.
The theme of the conference is Visualising the World: From the Sea-bed to the Cloud-tops
The first call for papers will be issued on January 4th 2010
In recent years the volume and diversity of imagery acquired by satellite, airborne, ground and ship-based sensors has grown enormously, and the number of application domains in which the images are used has similarly multiplied. At the same time, digital mapping tools such as Google Earth, and the media use of images, after natural disasters for example, have brought remotely sensed imagery into the public domain as never before. But how can we best communicate the results derived from imagery, or from integrating images with other spatial data? How can we use these data to depict the world of today, as well as predict how it might change in the future? How can the world invisible to our eyes be made visible?
These and many other questions will be explored through the following themes:
Marine and coastal management
Ocean governance and security
Underground and underwater
Climate adaptation and mitigation
Polar and high altitude regions
Forests, food and vegetation
Atmosphere and weather
Vertical profiling
Close range sensors
New sensors and processing technologies
Four keynote speakers will present their expert views on the themes of –
End users of imagery from a UK and Irish perspective (Ian Greenway)
Remote Sensing for the marine environment (Peter Heffernan)
Remote Sensing for the terrestrial environment and GMES (Alan Belward)
Photogrammetric measurements of environmental change (Hans-Gerd Maas)

Current legal issues for satellite earth observation
8th April, 2010 – 9th April, 2010
Satellite Earth observation is becoming more and more an efficient tool for
monitoring all kinds of resources of Earth. Remotely sensed data are now a reliable
basis for decision-making in many areas of society. We experience increasing
resolutions both spatially and spectrally. Constellations of small satellites are capable
to provide good daily coverage of the Earth’s surface and allow to increase the
temporal resolution. The progress resulting from satellite Earth observation allows to
expand the application fields but also brings to light new problems to be discussed in a
broader public debate.
This Conference deals with two important and topical aspects of satellite Earth
observation: – treaty monitoring and law enforcement through satellite Earth observation, – privacy conflicts from high resolution imagery.
It brings together experts from the remote sensing and in the legal fields. It aims
at decision-makers in the field of treaty monitoring and international law
enforcement (foreign and environment ministries, international organizations). This
provides the unique opportunity to discuss the different implications stemming from
the technology developments and applications as well as from legal and regulatory perspectives.
The focus of the discussions at this Conference is to optimise the regulatory
framework for satellite Earth observation thus supporting the full implementation of its potentials.

Core Spatial Databases – Updating, Maintenance and Services – from Theory to Practice
15th March, 2010 – 17th March, 2010
You are cordially invited to participate and contribute to the ISPRS Multi-Commission Workshop on “Core Spatial Databases: Updating, Maintenance and Services, from
Theory to Practice,” organized jointly by six ISPRS Working Groups from three Commissions and to take place in Haifa from March 15 to 17, 2010. The Workshop will bring together researchers, scholars, students, professionals, vendors, users, managers and decision makers to present, exhibit and discuss the issues and latest trends in the Maintenance, Updating and Services of core spatial data bases. Credible classification of remotely sensed data is currently one of the most challenging facets of geoinformation sciences. The significant advance we have been witnessing in remotely sensed data quality and the similar progress we are seeing in computing power enable us today to simultaneously study a large number of spatial phenomena. Rapid increase in available data sources (more satellites, new airborne sensor ystems,
advanced ground scanners and in situ observations) and the multi-source complex data they generate calls for the automatization of image understanding processes.
Automatization becomes fundamental to ensure spatial data bases remain relevant and responsive to modern processing and product requirements. From location
definition, phenomenon description and decision making, spatially structured and textured data serve as the source for intelligent, timely and effective answers.
Each of the six contributing ISPRS Working Groups will organize special sessions that will complement our jointly organized theme sessions. Also offered during the
Workshop are technical and social events and “Holy Land” tours after the Workshop.

Historic maps and imagery for modern scientific applications II
1st October, 2009 – 3rd October, 2009
What kind of data sources, i.e. historic maps and engravings, aerial and terrestrial
images or classic paintings, are available to address current day research objectives?
The conference serves as a platform for scientists of various disciplines who employ historic maps and/or imagery for their research: Archaeologists utilizing historic aerial imagery for mapping of surface features, Historians working on terrestrial and urbanistic developments as well as Geoscientists quantifying landscape evolution from historic maps are cordially invited to present their work. We also call upon scientists from Geodesy and Informatics to present aims and methods for digitizing and visualization of historic data, as well as anyone else working in related fields.
Main focus 2009: Maps, sketches and travelogues of historic expeditions
The main topic in 2009 will be concerned with the impact that travelogues, sketches and maps of the first explorers have retained until today. How do these reports support science today?
Humboldt’s Expedition to America and the exploration of Egypt following Napoleon’s Egyptian expeditions at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century marked a turning point in the spirit of researchers towards the exploration of pristine areas. As a consequence countries were competing in a race like behavior to send their best
explorers to discover places and follow rivers to their springs, i.e. the Nile River.
Despite stiff competition amongst explorers the last empty spots on the globe were not
filled until the 1930’s. The crossing of the world’s largest sand desert, Rub al-Chali, was accomplished not before 1931.
From today’s perspective the maps, sketches and travelogues of these expeditions are
indispensible as they are the first and only report on the natural landscapes, animal and plant life and also the conventions and habits of native people that often changed drastically with the arrival of the explorers or soon thereafter.

High-Resolution Earth Imaging for Geospatial Information
2nd June, 2009 – 9th June, 2009
ISPRS Hannover Workshop 2009
W/G 1/2, 1/4, IV/2, IV/3, VII/2
Earth imaging from air and space has undergone major changes over the last years. Examples of new and significant developments comprise a growing use of digital aerial cameras, an increasing number of high-resolution and hyperspectral satallite sensors, of laser scanning and SAR/inSAR. Calibration issues are important for every sensor. Today, all these data are used for the production of geospatial information. At the same time, updating existing geospatial databases has gained more importance, and automation has had a significant impact on the processing chain. In addition, the stunning success of Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth along with developments such as GEO (intergovernmental Group of Earth Observation), GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) and GMES (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security) have significantly changed the remote sensing arena in the last few years. These developments form the background for the ISPRS Hannover Workshop “High-Resolution Earth Imaging for Geospatial Information 2009”, which you are cordially invited to attend. This meeting is a follow-up workshop of those held in Hannover in previous years. The single-track workshop addresses experts from research, government and private industry. It consists of high quality papers, and will provide an international forum for discussion of leading research and technological developments as well as applications in the field. IPI is proud to announce that Intergraph agreed to be the exclusive sponsor of this event. During Thursday afternoon, Intergraph will conduct a master class where the processing chain of photogrammetry and remote sensing is illustrated by software demonstrations and real-life examples.

BARSC Workshop 2009 - Remote Sensing in the Green Economy: Applications & Opportunities
21st May, 2009 – 21st May, 2009
The drive to monitor and mitigate global climate change, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, prevent environmental pollution, and protect the Earth’s natural resources is set to create numerous new jobs and substantial wealth for the remote sensing community through a variety of new opportunities, in today’s “green economy”.
Recent years have seen an increasing role for remote sensing in the green agenda. It is already well established in climate science and policy making, particularly in respect of monitoring changes to Earth’s climate and the planning of mitigation actions to counter such changes. It is already delivering valuable data to environmentalists, climate scientists and decision makers, and new opportunities are continuously arising as a result of developments in the underlying science and in remote sensing technologies.
This year’s BARSC workshop will examine the role of remote sensing in support of the green economy. The day will explore recent developments and achievements in this sector and discuss the opportunities they hold for the UK. Analysts from the remote sensing industry will describe how satellite remote sensing data is already being used for such applications, and scientists will offer their perspective on what has currently been achieved and what areas need further development. The impact and influence of related activities of organisations such as ESA, the EC, GEO and CEOS will be discussed.
The event is organised by BARSC, the British Association of Remote Sensing Companies, and is co-sponsored by BNSC, the British National Space Centre and by NCEO, the National Centre for Earth Observation. The event will bring together an audience from the public and private sectors with a common interest in getting the most from today’s leading research and development in remote sensing for green applications.

Object based landscape analysis (OBLA)
7th April, 2009 – 8th April, 2009
Two-day meeting of the RSPSoc Land Cover/Land Use SIG
Summary of meeting
Earth Observation imagery is a major source of information for characterising the Earth’s surface, but is conventionally analysed using pixel-based approaches that do not incorporate the concept of landscape features or real world objects. Approaches and technology that exploit landscape features to increase the accuracy and usability of EO-derived products are now becoming mainstream. These object-based methods employ spatial frameworks often aligned to the needs of scientists, policy makers and end users, but straightforward application of off-the-shelf packages is not always well-conceived. The aim of this meeting is to bring together practitioners in remote sensing, GIS and environmental science to identify best-practice in the development and application of object-based landscape analysis techniques.
Updated information
The OBLA meeting has now passed. Presentation pdf downloads and photos of the event are available below. A meeting report will appear soon. The book of abstracts can be downloaded by clicking HERE.
Special Issue of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science

SilviLaser 2008
17th September, 2008 – 19th September, 2008
SilviLaser 2008 will be the 8th international conference in a series focussing on applications of laser systems for forest assessment and inventory
Background:
In recent years there has been rapid development and use of laser systems in inventorying, assessing, and monitoring of forests. Applications of laser technology have included the estimation of forest biophysical parameters (including carbon) at the individual tree or stand level as part of local, regional and even national forest inventory. In addition, laser data have been used to monitor forest change, model susceptibility to wind or fire damage, and map wildlife habitat. Laser systems can operate on ground-based, airborne and satellite platforms. They are categorised as scanning or profiling systems supplying range or waveform information per laser pulse. This distinction is, however, becoming increasingly blurred as laser systems evolve.
Aims of Silvilaser 2008:
SilviLaser 2008 will be the 8th international conference in a series focussing on applications of laser systems for forest assessment and inventory. Previous conferences have taken place in Canada, Australia, Sweden, Germany, USA, Japan and Finland.
SilviLaser 2008 aims to bring together research scientists and practitioners from around the world to share their experience in the development and application of LiDAR for forest assessment and inventory. We strongly encourage presentations across all forms of laser system, from all possible platforms, and across a full range of forest applications. The conference will discuss the state-of-the-art in laser systems and data processing techniques in order to meet a range of information needs. The conference aims to encourage new and stronger linkages between LiDAR practitioners, and in particular between researchers, data providers and end-users of derived products.
Topics for presentation:
The conference will encourage papers on terrestrial, airborne and space-borne LiDAR data (discrete return and waveform) for the following forest related topics:
• Forestry applications & inventory
• Forest monitoring & change detection
• Ecological applications & habitat mapping
• LiDAR data fusion (ground-based, airborne, satellite)
• Data fusion (in-situ, aerial photos, hyper-spectral)
• Algorithm & techniques development
• System & intensity calibration
• Large-scale & operation applications of LiDAR
• New technologies
There will be a special session on ecological applications for forest habitat assessment, sponsored by the British Ecological Society.
Keynote speakers are Professor Ralph Dubayah (University of Maryland), Dr Wesley Newton (U.S. Geological Survey) and Dr Richard Lucas (University of Wales Aberystwyth).

Young Geo Professional Magazine
19th June, 2008 – 4th August, 2008
The geomatics and hydrographics field is flourishing as never before; nevertheless, it is experiencing a shortage of personnel. Companies and governments simply cannot attract sufficient qualified personnel to get all the work done. Furthermore, universities and educational institutions all over the world are suffering from a lack of new students.
How can we turn the tide? How can we interest people in starting a career in, for example, land surveying, electronic charting, remote sensing, positioning or hydrographic surveying? As a publisher, we think this can be accomplished with a magazine, and associated website, focussed on young people at precisely that time when they are making decisions about their future career.
The central question addressed is: What makes Geomatics so appealing? And why is a career in Geomatics so interesting?
The magazine hopes to achieve this through easy accessible and entertaining articles on a variety of topics: e.g. experiences of students from all over the world, exciting and adventurous internships/jobs, interesting facts about geomatics, etc.
We are currently looking for students or young professionals who have (or had) an interesting internship or job (such as surveying the Chinese Wall, Dredging the Amazon River, etc.) and
who would like to write about these experiences.
Furthermore, we would like an article about the “tips and tricks” of choosing the right school. In other words, the article should answer questions like why should a student choose a career in geomatics, how do you choose the right university, how do you choose the right Major, how do you know whether geomatics is right for you? What can you expect at school (which courses? Which courses are important/fun/adventurous, etc…? Is it a very practical study?)
The question to you is, would you be interested in writing a story for us? Or do you perhaps have any other interesting article suggestions? Do you want to participate?
Then contact:
Victor van Essen:
Marjan de Vries:
The magazine and website will be available for students at the start of the study year (September 2008).

FIG Working Week 2008, Stockholm, Sweden
14th June, 2008 – 19th June, 2008
The theme of the Working Week is “Integrating Generations”, which addresses many of the issues facing surveyors in the next years. These include questions related to the need of getting young people interested in surveying and geomatics, how to keep the professional qualifications up to date, need for capacity building – all issues of great interest for FIG and the organisers. The theme can also be read more closely related to the profession itself: what is the role of modern technology in GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), geoinformatics, laser scanning etc. This fast growing technology will change the way of our profession.
All ten FIG technical commissions will attend the conference and papers are therefore requested to all the following topics:
Professional Standards and Practice
Professional Education
Spatial Information Management
Hydrography
Positioning and Measurement
Engineering Surveys
Cadastre and Land Management
Spatial Planning and Development
Valuation and the Management of Real Estate
Construction Economics and Management.
As Swedish surveyors are very successful in the fields of real estate management and valuation we are happy to announce that FIG together with UN-Habitat will organise a special seminar in conjunction to the Working Week. This is also a showcase how Swedish surveyors have a strong interest in assisting surveyors and land related professions in developing countries.

Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing in a Dynamic World
4th June, 2008 – 7th June, 2008
4th Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group on Developing Countries in conjunction with GISDECO 8, 8th workshop of the GIS in Developing Countries.
Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing in a Dynamic World
ABSTRACT DEADLINE: January 11th 2008
For the first time, this workshop brings together experts from EARSeL and GISDECO networks. Especially for developing countries, integration of Remote Sensing and GIS offers unique access to primary data on the status of land surfaces, as well as possibilities for analysis, visualisation and development of possible solutions of problems, which due to dynamic changes both nature and humanity are exposed to. Global urbanisation, climate change and its effects on natural and human systems, land use and land cover changes, and salinisation are imminent dangers.
The workshop provides a forum for presenting and discussing results, and to exchange expertise and experience among researchers and users engaged in solving the problems of developing countries.
