RSPSoc Annual Conference with Irish Earth Observation Symposium

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

In 2010 the first joint UK Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society and Irish Earth Observation Symposium conference will be held in Cork, Ireland. It will be hosted by University College Cork and the National Maritime College of Ireland from 31st August to 3rd September 2010.

The theme of the conference is Visualising the World: From the Sea-bed to the Cloud-tops

The first call for papers will be issued on January 4th 2010

In recent years the volume and diversity of imagery acquired by satellite, airborne, ground and ship-based sensors has grown enormously, and the number of application domains in which the images are used has similarly multiplied. At the same time, digital mapping tools such as Google Earth, and the media use of images, after natural disasters for example, have brought remotely sensed imagery into the public domain as never before. But how can we best communicate the results derived from imagery, or from integrating images with other spatial data? How can we use these data to depict the world of today, as well as predict how it might change in the future? How can the world invisible to our eyes be made visible?

These and many other questions will be explored through the following themes:

Marine and coastal management
Ocean governance and security
Underground and underwater
Climate adaptation and mitigation
Polar and high altitude regions
Forests, food and vegetation
Atmosphere and weather
Vertical profiling
Close range sensors
New sensors and processing technologies

Four keynote speakers will present their expert views on the themes of –

End users of imagery from a UK and Irish perspective (Ian Greenway)
Remote Sensing for the marine environment (Peter Heffernan)
Remote Sensing for the terrestrial environment and GMES (Alan Belward)
Photogrammetric measurements of environmental change (Hans-Gerd Maas)

The previous 2 editions where held in 2008 in Ascona (Switzerland) and in
2009 in Trento (Italy).

The school is co-organized by Fabio Remondino (FBK Trento, Italy), Danny Donoghue (Durham University, UK) and Jon Mills (Newcastle University, UK). The School aims to bring together young scientists, developers and advanced users from geomatics and related fields of application (photogrammetry, remote sensing, LiDAR, GIS, Cultural Heritage, archaeology, environmental monitoring and mapping) to study and discuss the latest developments in digital recording and 3D modelling of complex objects and sites, with emphasis on those of Cultural Heritage value.

The summer school will consist of theoretical and practical lectures, data acquisition and processing, discussions and interactive labs. The topics will be: geomatics techniques for Cultural Heritage documentation, airborne LiDAR and terrestrial scanning technologies, multi-spectral imaging, photogrammetry, data archiving and GIS in Cultural Heritage.

The labs (based on software installed on local PCs) will deal with satellite and terrestrial image processing and 3D modelling, LiDAR and terrestrial scanning, GIS. Certificates of participation and ECTS credits will be delivered upon request and agreements with the organizers.

The REGISTRATION FEE of the school is 250 £ and it includes the participation to labs and theoretical lectures, the material of the lectures, the welcome party and the social dinner of the event.

Oceans from Space, Venice 2010

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

A brief note to bring to your attention the 31 January 2010 deadline, which has been set for both the “Oceans from Space” early-bird registration, at a reduced fee, and the submission of contributions.

Many of you asked about possible contributions: indeed, ALL accepted submissions will be presented as posters. It’s a new feature of the Symposium, which will allow to avoid parallel sessions, and provide a complete overview of current research to all attendees.

More details concerning the most recent updates of the Venice 2010 programme, as well as a bit of information about venue, transportations and accommodations, are available on the Symposium website:

http://oceansfromspace.jrc.ec.europa.eu/

Thank you all for your support. The Organizing Committee would be even more grateful, if you could help out by:
(a)    submitting your contributions as early as possible, and certainly before the 31/01/2010 deadline;
(b) registering, and paying the relevant fee (possibly on-line, at the website above), also at a very early stage.

As usual, this message is being sent to the (extended) Venice 2000 emailing list, but I trust that you will also help by spreading the news about the Symposium with your friends & colleagues. I hope to see you all in Venice, in just 3 months!
