Rachel Gaulton

Occupation: PhD student

Interests: optical and lidar remote sensing, forestry, ecology

University: The University of Edinburgh

Research: Remote sensing for continuous cover forestry

Details of Research: Investigating the use of optical and LiDAR imagery to quantify and describe spatial aspects of forest structure. New methods are needed to monitor structure in more sustainable ' continuous cover' forest systems in plantation conifer stands. In particular, this research focuses on the identification and delineation of openings in the forest canopy from optical images, as a way of describing forest structure and predicting light levels in the understory.
