RSPSoc Student Profile: Nanna Karlsson

Occupation: Ph.D. student

Interests: Glaciology, radio-echo sounding of ice masses, planetary science (in particular Mars)

Bio: 2007 - Ph.D. student at University of Hull / British Antarctic Survey 2004-2007 MSc geophysics, University of Copenhagen 2006 ESA Alpbach Summer School on "Monitoring Natural Hazards from Space" 2005 Karthaus Summer School on "Ice and Climate" 2004 Exchange student at University of Western Ontario, Canada 2001-2004 BSc physics-geophysics, University of Copenhagen

Course: Physical geography

University: University of Hull / British Antarctic Survey

Research: Internal Layers of Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica

Details of Research: The aim of my Ph.D.-project is to investigate the large-scale stability of the Pine Island glacier in West Antarctica. In my PhD project I will use radio echo sounding data to classify the internal stratigraphy and identify areas of the glacier that have undergone changes in flow pattern. The distribution and depth of the layers will be used in comparison against results from ice flow modelling.
