RSPSoc Student Profile: Guy Schumann

Occupation: GWR Fellowship in Hydrology

Interests: Remote sensing (SAR) of flood hydrology and integration with hydrodynamic models

Course: PhD in Geography

University: Bristol University

Research: Towards improved flood modelling using remote sensing, with a special emphasis on synthetic aperture radar

Details of Research: Though flooding is a natural process, its increased frequency in some parts of the world as a result of climatic change poses a threat to society and the natural environment. More effective flood management strategies are thus required. Strategic flood management plans need to integrate various forms of geo-spatial information as well as reliable dynamic flood inundation models. Therefore, it is the aim of this PhD to investigate the potential of remote sensing, particularly SAR, for flood hazard mangement and the development as well as the improvement of flood inundation models. A special emphasis is given to (the integration of) data and modelling uncertainties. The prime research site is a well-documented flood-prone reach of the Alzette River, north of Luxembourg City (G.D. of Luxembourg).
