GRSG SIG Annual Report 1997-1998

The Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) is jointly affiliated to the Remote Sensing and Geological Societies It aims to foster the use of earth observation data by all geoscientists.

With around 200 members worldwide, the GRSG is very much an international organisation. The strong themes running through the past year have been collaboration with our parent bodies and international relations.

In September 1997 the GRSG helped convene the geology session at the Remote Sensing Society’s annual conference, RSS97, which was held at Reading University. In cooperation with the RSS, GRSG brought Professor Ron Lyon of Stanford University to the conference. As well as providing a keynote speech, Professor Lyon contributed papers to several other sessions and was also the guest at the second ever GRSG Annual Dinner. As one of the founders of modern remote sensing, Professor Lyon’s involvement added considerably to the meeting’s success.

The international membership of GRSG was well served by our participation in the 12th ERIM Geological Remote Sensing Conference, which was held in Denver during November 1997. The GRSG convened an informal lunchtime discussion session on the theme “Raw Data or Customised Products”. Provoked by a thoughtful presentation from Eric Peters of Australian Photogeological Consultants. A wide-ranging and frank discussion followed. This provided an enjoyable contrast to the more formal sessions of the main conference. With 50 members present, this session also provided an interesting forum in which to hold the 1997 GRSG AGM.

In January 1998, the focus switched to our other parent body, the Geological Society. The GRSG participated in a joint session on mineral exploration at the Mineral Deposit Study Group’s annual meeting. Greenwich University hosted this informative meeting, at which the audience were treated to a series of presentations by exploration experts from around the world. With one speaker from as far afield as Australia, the international appeal of the GRSG was clear once again.

Since the next ERIM meeting is not scheduled until March 1999, the year 1998 provides a welcome opportunity to focus more sharply on our activities at home. The GRSG will be back at Greenwich again in September to take part in RSS98.

A major research in progress meeting for UK members will be convened at Oxford Brookes University in November. It is the committee’s intention that this should become the regular date in the calendar for the GRSG’s annual meeting and AGM.

Other plans for 1998 include include further improvements to the popular GRSG Newsletter, which recently reached its 21st birthday issue, and the upgrading of the GRSG website,

At this year’s AGM in Oxford, several GRSG officers will be standing down after completing their terms of office, so it is time once again for an injection of new blood; volunteers for the committee are always welcome!
