GRSG SIG Annual Report 1999-2000

The Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) is jointly affiliated to the Remote Sensing and Geological Societies. It aims to foster the use of earth observation data by all geoscientists.

Over the past year GRSG maintained its membership database at around 200 members, including many from overseas. Last year was yet another good year for strengthening our international membership, due to the 13th ERIM conference in Vancouver, March 1999. A number of UK-GRSG members attended this conference, including 5 committee members. This resulted in a very successful lunchtime session being held by GRSG, during the busy 3-day conference.

GRSG’s main meeting was held in November 1999 at Burlington House. A very successful one-day session was convened on the geological applications of radar remote sensing. This was obviously a popular and timely subject as it attracted more than 80 delegates, from both academia and industry. A total of 8 presentations were made on the day, with subject topics ranging from the use of radar data for offshore oil seep detection, to looking for buried river channels in desert terrain.

After this meeting GRSG held its AGM. This was a fairly quiet event compared to the previous years, when typically a number of committee members changed posts. This year saw no major changes to the GRSG committee.

In-between ERIM and the Burlington House meeting, GRSG also provided a speaker, on the subject of remote sensing applied to civil engineering, to the North West Regional Group of the Geological Society.

GRSG maintained its popular newsletter throughout 1999, publishing three editions. The new Millennium kicked off in style with the inclusion of colour pages in the newsletter for the first time, kindly supported by funding from the RSS.

Year 2000 looks like it will be as busy as ever for GRSG as plans are currently being drawn up for participation in ERIM 2000 in Las Vegas and RSS2000 in Leicester.

A joint meeting will be held with the Engineering Group of the Geological Society in London in October, and GRSG’s main meeting and AGM in London in November. We look forward to seeing you at one of them!
