Laser Scanning and Lidar SIG Annual Report 2006-2007
Following on from the inaugural meeting of the Laser Scanning (Lidar) SIG, held in February 2006 at Ordnance Survey, a one day SIG session was held at the Annual Conference in Cambridge in September 2006. This session was well attended, by both industry and academia, and saw twelve presentations and four posters from SIG members. Topics for presentations focused on mapping, the natural environment, and terrain modelling.
The rapidly growing interest in this field from RSPSoc and beyond was further demonstrated by the success of a one day joint meeting with Vegetation SIG, held at the University of Nottingham in April 2007, on “Measuring and Monitoring the Vegetative Environment through Laser Scanning”. With 12 oral presentations and 50 attendees, it was a day with a tight focus and excellent discussions on cutting-edge research in the proliferating use of terrestrial, airborne and spaceborne laser scanning of vegetation. We thank both the RGS Biogeography Research Group and 3D Laser Mapping for their kind sponsorship of the meeting.
The steering group has been involved in collating material for the SIG website, which will provide additional information to that already available to SIG members from the RSPSoc site. We hope to launch the new website by the end of the year. We hope to run another one day workshop later in 2007 and, following the success of the joint vegetation meeting, we would again like to collaborate with another SIG. Members are encouraged to contact either Sarah or Doreen to discuss ideas.
Finally, we hope to see many members at the Annual Conference to be held in Newcastle this year. It will be a good opportunity to meet and to exchange news.
