Synthetic Aperture Radar

SIG Summary

The purpose of the Group is to promote the development and use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and to encourage research in all aspects of SAR acquisition processing and interpretation. The areas of interest are wide ranging, including new sensor technology, processing techniques, GNSS-R and the complete range of applications, including data fusion with other sensors.

SIG Activities

Awaiting Image

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been used for many years as a standard source of remote sensing data. However, new airborne and spaceborne sensors are continually discovering new capabilities and applications and there are always challenges in acquiring and interpreting data.

The SAR Special Interest Group of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society aims to:

  • Promote the development & use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR)
  • Encourage research in all aspects of SAR acquisition processing and interpretation
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of information & ideas

We aim to bridge the gap between the SAR specialists and the applications experts. Activities include:

  • Organisation of Events and Meetings both independently and with other organisations holding similar aims
  • Maintaining an Email Listing for the dissemination of information
  • Maintaining www pages with links to information relevant to the SIG’s activities

Current areas of interest include the following:

  • Sensors and systems
  • Processing techniques
  • Calibration
  • Image processing and interpretation
  • Rectification
  • Polarimetry
  • Radargrammetry
  • Interferometry
  • GNSS-R
